The pressures of daily life seem to be ever increasing and lots of words have been written about the changes between the generations, and how we live to day. Many questions are being asked about 21st Century living and if, in an age that is ‘always on’ we allow ourselves enough time for reflection.
Ours is a generation more aware about healthy living, but this extends beyond the role that good food and regular exercise plays. There is much we can do to take care of ourselves, and finding the time to do this is something that we are building into our daily lives.
Here at Real Plymouth we are on a quest to find the calm, the invigorating, and the relaxing. Even in this beautiful corner of the county we are not immune from the stresses of everyday life. And every day, we strive to find a balance: through exercise, healthful living, and the occasional spa break!
In no particular order, here are our favourite three pick-me-ups.
Bovey Castle Spa
Dartmoor National Park, North Bovey, Dartmoor, Devon, TQ13 8RE
The Spa at Bovey Castle is a sanctuary in the truest sense of the word. In a majestic hotel setting on Dartmoor national park, bespoke spa experiences are offered to relax, revive and restore.
We like to stop by the Art Deco swimming pool which overlooks the river. The Dartmoor vista is magnificent – quite literally you feel as if you are peering to the edge of the world.
Spa facilities also include a sauna and steam room and the hotel gym is pristine and well stocked. www.boveycastle.com/spa
The Crescent Clinic in Plymouth
The Crescent Acupuncture Clinic, 22 Hartley Avenue, Mannamead, Plymouth, PL35HP
Acupuncture has been practised in Eastern countries for more than 2,000 years. Acupuncture works to help maintain your body’s equilibrium and involves the insertion of very fine sterile needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of vital energy or qi (pronounced chee).
The underlying principle of acupuncture treatment is that illness and pain occur when qi becomes blocked or depleted. There can be many reasons for this: emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury are among the most common.
In the Mannamead district of Plymouth, the Crescent Acupuncture Clinic is a calm and restful haven of wellbeing. Sharon Yelland has been practising acupuncture and associated techniques for 18 years. And under her guidance the clinic follows the principles of Eastern medicine by seeking to treat the whole person: the mind, body and spirit.
Walk this way!
There are many benefits of walking, it doesn’t just reduce blood pressure and risk of heart disease. A brisk walk for 30 minutes every day will have you sleeping better, coping more easily with any of life’s stresses and seeing noticeable improvements to memory function.
There is no need for special equipment, although a pair of sturdy boots will serve you well on the wilds of Dartmoor! Whether you stroll from the Hoe or out towards Plymbridge, or if you tour the moors or the coast path, Plymouth is a fantastic place from which to start.
Upload your photographs to our Pinterest board, and share your favourite walks with us.
The South West Coast Path and Visit Dartmoor are two well researched local resources – for walking and other information!
We love this coastal walk from the Cremyl ferry, taking in Kingsand and Cawsand. And the historical walk around Plymouth sound will uncover some real treasures – no matter how well you think you know the area!
