A walk is such a good way to stay healthy. At Real-Places we know there are so many reasons to get outside and go for a walk and when it is wild and wet we take some convincing! But at this time of year, when buds are blooming and days are slowly getting longer, we feel inspired to get out there and make the most of it.
So if you need another excuse to get out there, our handy list includes the reasons that walking is just so good for you. We’ve started with three of our favourite places for walks in and around Plymouth to help you get moving!
We’re going to walk to…
Plymouth’s largest park has sweeping views over the city and is a popular destination for all ages. For walking, there are several wildflower meadows to explore and bat and bird boxes are dotted around for nature spotting.
We love: family time here, especially our younger members!
On the opposite bank of the Tamar from Plymouth, in Cornwall, stands Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park.
Mount Edgcumbe House is surrounded by 865 acres of the most amazing Country Park.
We love: to bring a picnic, walk for a few hours and stay for the day
Just three miles outside of Plymouth, parking is free at Lopwell Dam and there is a great little café if we have forgotten a picnic! This is a wildlife haven and the visitor centre is a fantastic resource to make sure you get the most from your trip.
A peaceful place for a walk this is a flat route so good for beginners, or if you’re looking for something gentle.

5 reasons to go for a Devon walk
1 Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
Regular walking means your heart becomes stronger and your lungs are more efficient. IF your blood pressure is high, this will help it return to normal. For best effect, walk as close to a meal as possible.
2 Improve your mood and sense of wellbeing
Walking gives you time to think, it helps you to stay in the moment and as you walk you can resolve problems and make decisions.
3 Maintain a healthy weight
Walking is not going to give you dramatic weight loss, but frequent walking helps keep hip and knee joints moving. A 30 minute stroll 6 times a week will burn about 1,000 calories.
4 Reduce risk of coronary heart disease
Again, just 30 minutes a day is enough to make a difference, especially if you are a risk category for stroke or heart disease.
5 Boost vitamin D levels
Low levels of vitamin D affect the immune system and bone health. The best way to boost absorption is to get outside. From March to October between 11am and 3pm are the best times – so this month really is the perfect time to go for a walk!
