Real Cornwall and Real Plymouth are on an eternal quest for the ultimate hot chocolate – and with a perfect submarino, we think we found it. Well, the children did!
We heard about a submarino hot chocolate from our pals at Brew Cornwall – the dinky little turquoise van that pops up around the county delivering proper coffee to campsites and the like. We were camping on the north coast and the kids needed extra warmth after a damp night under canvas!
But what is a submarino, and what makes it a perfect submarino? Simply put, this is the most simple way to make hot chocolate: a square of dark choc dunked into a mug of warm milk.
The chocolate is the submarine, and it needs to be ‘sunk’ into the hot milk. Use a spoon to stir and the milk becomes hot chocolate. Get it right and a sludge of melted chocolate sits at the bottom of the cup for one final enjoyment!
And yes, this is such a simple recipe you would think that it could not possibly taste so delicious! Truth is, dark chocolate and full cream milk is a blissful combination. And melting a piece of chocolate just seems to make for a creamier texture than if you use a hot chocolate powder, or even cocoa.
A perfect submarino needs:
One mug of full cream milk One small Green & Blacks 70% cocoa chocolate bar, or one chocolate stirrer from Choco Larder (available in the Cornish Food Box).
In a small pan, bring a mug of chocolate to simmering point and pour into the mug. Alternatively, you could heat the milk for 40-50 seconds in a microwave.
Unwrap the chocolate, and use as a spoon to stir the milk gently around in the mug.
The chocolate will melt and you will be left with the most delicious, and most simple, hot chocolate! Trust us… you will not be buying hot chocolate powder again!
This is a great recipe if you prefer almond milk or coconut milk, or hazelnut milk is good, too.
Gentle spice: grind a several scrapes of nutmeg and place half a cinnamon stick for a rich aroma.
Add a double shot of espresso for a (distinctly grown-up!) mocha!
Brew Cornwall and their dinky little van! Kate also runs The Caff behind the Cornish Food Box Company and not only will they make you The Perfect Submarino… they provide blankets to wrap yourself in while you sip!
