The multi-award winning Cornish Food Box Company is revolutionising Cornwall one plate of food at a time.
At Real Cornwall we champion the real people and places that make Cornish life so special. This is one of Cornwall’s most forward-thinking companies and they already have a host of foodie awards under their belt, but now they are setting their sights on bigger and greater things.
Tor and Lucy, two Cornish sisters who grew up in Breage near Helston are the business owners and they come from a local farming family. They set up the business with the aim of delivering 100% Cornish produce across the county and developing a strong and sustainable future for the Cornish economy.
They believe that real food comes from real people working on real farms and as the business has grown they have responded to customer requests for more pantry and store cupboard items.

In terms of convenience, what they do is as good as any supermarket because customer service is at the heart.
“We’ve done the hard work and made it incredibly easy to buy food from Cornish producers through our online home delivery service, Truro shop and cafe. Customers order the food they want, and we deliver it to their door,” says Tor.
In just 5 years, their delivery service has put £2m back into the local economy. They have exciting plans to grow the business – they would like a production kitchen so food can be produced on site for the cafe and shop, they want the cafe to be accessible to all but to do this it needs disabled access and baby changing facilities.
Above all, this year Cornish Food Box wants 1% of households in Cornwall buying their food shopping from them and to further expand the range of food they sell. On an average spend of £30 this will mean £4 million annually for the Cornish economy.
Virgin Voom campaign
To continue to grow and to expand the way they want to, they’re looking to raise £20,000 through a Crowdfunder and Voom 2016 campaign.
“You should be able to trust the food that fuels you and your family. It’s this belief that has driven us grow our business,” says Lucy. “It’s really that simple – easy to order, ethical food that tastes delicious, supports food producers, the environment, and the Cornish economy. Food that works for us all – food how it should be.”
The company passes the fair price deal onto their producers, who get to keep most of the retail price customers pay. Instead of the third the supermarkets typically give to their suppliers, Cornish Food Box producers get on average two-thirds of everything you spend with us. They think this is only fair.
The food sold in the shop and online comes from the same place: it is harvested and freshly prepped for your order. That means almost no food waste so we can keep prices competitive and fair.
Know where your food comes from
Over the past 5 and half years Cornish Food Box has grown hugely to become an important outlet for many small local food producers. The company now employs 10 people at their Truro shop, cafe and distribution centre. Food from more than 150 Cornish producers is delivered to hundreds of homes each week.
